Today, we're headed to Lecce ("leche") in the southeast part of Italy - in the heel of the "boot"! First time traveling to this region and staying at an Airbnb in Centro Storico!
Here's some information on Lecce, including: "Lecce is the capital of the province of Lecce in Puglia...The city was founded around 2,000 years old and by the 15th century had become one of the most important cities in southern Italy. Over this period Lecce was decorated with important Baroque monuments and under threat from an Ottoman invasion, Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, rebuilt the defenses of the city along with a new castle..."
Lunch picnic on the speed train to Lecce
The region of Salento: Olives and wheat country
Walking into centro storico (10-min. walk) from the train station)
Beautiful walk in to Lecce's centro storico
Sant' Oronzo piazza :)
The Roman Amphitheater, view from our Airbnb balcony.
Huge ceilings. A kitchenette behind
A "snack" with our aperol spritzers: Olives, foccaccia, balsamic and olive oil paste, and the region's taralli (a cross between a breadstick and a cracker)
Our little Airbnb - in this picture - look left of the tower, 2nd floor, (left of the green door)
Panoramic view from our balcony. Last night, we totally spaced out, listened to music on the plaza, and watched people passeggiata from this perch.
Our view overlooking the plaza and Roman Amphitheater is hard to stop looking at...
